PRACTICE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
Fritz Kreisler, the greatest violinist, had one big problem all his life: he hated to practice. His wife, who was deeply concerned about his career, kept after him all the time: “Have you practiced today? How much have you practiced? Be sure to practice!” And he was constantly coming up with all sorts of excuses and rationalizations not to practice. Toward the end of his life, a great banquet was held in Kreisler’s honor. One speaker after another — great conductors and musicians — rose to speak of him in glowing terms. One even said, “He is the world’s greatest living musician.” Beaming, Fritz Kreisler turned to his wife and said, “Did you ever hear such praise?” Without cracking a smile, Mrs. Kreisler said, “Yes, but think what they could have said if you had practiced!” Sunday Sermons, Vol. 12, No. 4, July/August, 1982.
