THE WORLD’S AN INSECURE PLACE
We all want security. We cry “peace, peace” but there is no peace. I found a couple of items from the LA Times that remind us there is no peace, that this world is an unsafe and uncertain place. The first was from the August 22, 1988, issue of the Times. It dealt with the demise of the Soviets’ Cosmos 1900 satellite. It is a 4.4 ton nuclear-powered satellite that was launched in December, 1987. They lost contact with it and its orbit began to deteriorate. It was going to fall out of the sky with its 110 pounds of enriched uranium fuel! The article went on to say that about 50 pieces of space junk as big or bigger than the Cosmos 1900 fall out of the sky every year!
