MORE THAN RITUAL
As a preacher’s kid I was born, bred and raised in the Church. I have seen hundreds of baptisms. Now a pastor myself, I have officiated at numerous baptism. In the midst of this overwhelming witness there is one baptism which stands a head taller in my memory. It happened one sleepy Sunday morning where I sat in the pew trying to keep awake. My father, the pastor, went through the usual routine, hymn, creed, prayers, offering, etc. Then the Strother family were invited to come forward. Little Sarah was cute and content as she lay in her mother’s arms. The pastor opened the book and asked the questions of the family gathered for this lovely event. Actually, the questions that are asked are quite impressive if one stops and listens, rather than treating them as merely a ritual.
