PUT ON CHRIST
A number of the following stories were sent in by Charles Krieg, St. Joseph’s Seminary in Princeton, NJ. Several of them come from Jokes Priests Can Tell, ed. Arthur Tonne. The “Christening Gown” is often a treasured item in many families, passed down from generation to generation. Some families have kept the tradition of embroidering the names of those baptized, together with the dates of baptism, on the underside of the garment. The gown itself becomes a “family record,” making it still more cherished. During the ceremony, the gown is placed on the child, and in many churches, simple gowns are provided for families that do not have this tradition. Some gown is required, after all, for it is a part of the Rite of Baptism. But the gown, however cherished and revered, is but a symbol. The baptized person has been ‘Christ-ened’, and the ‘Christ-ening’ gown merely indicates that the person has put on Christ. CK
