FIRST TIME OUT
Some time ago I came across a cartoon which showed a priest ready to baptize a baby — the family is present — the priest is standing next to the baptismal font holding the baby in his left hand — in his right hand is a bottle of champagne. He is holding the bottle as if he is ready to hit the baby over the head with it. The godfather is asking the priest: “Father, is this your first christening?” You don’t use champagne to christen a baby! You do that for a ship! You use water. And the use of water helps to bring out the meaning of baptism. Charles Krieg, Princeton, N.J.
