COURAGEOUS CANDOR
The following is an excerpt from Bill Moyers’ interview with Forrest McDonald: MOYERS: I remember the story of the time Lyndon Johnson was very morose. The polls had shown him down. He looked across the table to his unofficial adviser, Dean Acheson, and said, “Dean, I just don’t understand why people don’t like me.” And Dean Acheson, who had the courage of candor, or the candor of courage, said, “Well, Mr. President, it may be because you’re not a very likeable man.” Bill Moyers, A World of Ideas, pp. 112-113.
