THE POWER OF THE WORD
Julius Hickerson was a promising young doctor who could have made a fortune in the United States, but he felt God’s pull to missions. All of his friends and associates thought he was crazy to go to Columbia as a missionary who hoped to treat the soul as well as the body. He had been in Columbia 2 years with little visible result, and then in 1951, still just 2 years after he had arrived, he was tragically killed in a plane crash as he was attempting to take supplies to a remote village. In that wreckage some of the natives found a Bible in their language all marked up, they began to read it, and before long, people were saved and churches were started. Then they went to other villages and preached the gospel. After a while, Southern Baptists sent a missionary back into that area, unaware of what had taken place there.
