OUR BROKEN HEARTS
My heart breaks when Christmas begins the day after Halloween. Advent also breaks the hearts of many people because of the full-court press our culture attempts in the name of a “healthy business year-end.” But there is another voice calling. The voice of John the Baptist echoes the Prophet Isaiah, “Prepare the way; make straight the path.” Spiced cider and spicy living is not what the Advent and Christmas season is about. Abundant life, that’s it. As we walk gently in these four weeks of Advent and tiptoe into Christmas, we can learn to live in faith, in anticipation. We can glimpse the one who is coming. He breaks our hearts and then heals them. “Wait, watch,” the Baptist cries, “don’t rush.” Look for the one who found a home in a manger, who will live in our hearts and go gently with us through life, breaking our thick, calloused hearts to make room for love.
