CHRIST AND SANTA
It seems to me that rather than railing at Christmas commercialism we ought to insure that we give the sacred at least as much respect as we give the profane. Allow me a comparison, and you tell me if the above statement is opinionated or simply truthful. I submit we prepare better for the coming of Santa than for the coming of Christ. Consider . . .We expect Santa, we hope for Christ — Santa comes at midnight on Christmas Eve. Christ we “invoke,” “pray for,” “ask.” Despite the Scripture assuring us that he is where two or three gather in his name, we dare not “expect” Christ to attend services as we expect Santa at home. We give Santa food (milk and cookies), we thank God in Christ for food but no plate is at the table. We eagerly make children to go to see Santa, sometimes over their objections.
