THE VALUE OF ENCOURAGEMENT
The young Polish lad wanted to play the piano. It had been in his thoughts since childhood. He dreamed of becoming a great concert pianist. Yet, when he tried to play, critics told him he had stubby fingers and could never play well. They advised him to try the cornet. The youth bought a cornet and tried to play it. But a master of the instrument told him he did not have the lip to play a cornet. One day the lad met the great pianist, Anton Rubinstein. The famous musician gave the young man his first bit of encouragement about playing the piano. “Young man,” he said, “you might be able to play to piano. In fact, I think you can if you will practice seven hours a day.” The young man took the few words from Rubinstein to heart. He set himself to practice long hours.
