A SURPRISE BIRTHDAY
During college years, my roommate and I planned a surprise birthday party for Herb, a mutual friend. After arrangements were made and invitations were issued, we waited expectantly for the day to arrive. About thirty enthusiastic friends came that night to help celebrate Herb’s birthday. Suddenly we realized we had failed to arrange for the appearance of the honored guest. Thinking he would be in his usual place, we went in search of him. He could not be found, and none knew of his whereabouts. Returning to the party scene, we suggested it be called off inasmuch as the guest of honor was not available. Some suggested the party be held in his absence. When this was agreed upon, games, refreshments and all were entered upon with hilarity. A cake adorned with twenty-one candles was lit as all sang jovially, “Happy Birthday, dear Herb.” It all seemed like a big joke.
