THE LIGHT OF CHRISTMAS EVE
We light candles on this night before Christmas to symbolize the light which Christ brings to our darkness. We spread the light one to another, just as the Gospel is spread from person to person. There is a story of a downtown church in a large city. This church sold its valuable property so that an office building could be built. The church was given part of that building. The congregation would meet in the bottom part of the building with its tall windows reaching to the sidewalks. As people walked by they could look down into the sanctuary. One Christmas Eve, the congregation was gathered in celebration. During the service, the symbolic candles were lit and the light spread throughout the congregation. From outside, a passerby happened to notice the flickering candles through the windows. He stopped, peered down into the building and saw what was happening. He then reached into his pocket, pulled out a cigarette lighter…
