Joseph Emerson Eaton, 38, a member of a prominent New England family, was found dead just outside the doorway of the Carl’s Jr. restaurant on Market Street in San Francisco. Eaton grew up in the affluent Boston suburb of Duxbury, Mass. His grandfather, Charles Freedom Eaton Jr. was a prominent financier, a founder of Investors Bank and Trust Company. His father, Joseph Emerson Eaton Sr., is a retired business executive. Eaton enjoyed the privileges of his family’s wealth, attending prestigious New England prep schools. But his brother, Nick, said he “was an alcoholic from the time he was thirteen, when he took his first drink.” Eaton had enjoyed all of the comforts of a wealthy home, yet he had become one of San Francisco’s estimated 6,000 homeless.
