SAVED BY THE BELL
As the armies of Napoleon swept over Europe, one of his generals prepared to make an attack on the little town of Feldkirch on the Austrian border. It was early Easter morning and as Napoleon’s formidable army maneuvered into position on the heights above Feldkirch, a council of the town’s citizens was hastily called. Should they surrender, or should they attempt a defense? That was the question before them. Finally, as the discussion wore on, the venerable dean of the church arose and declared, “It seems to me that we have been counting on our own strength and wisdom in this crisis, and that will fail. This is Easter Day, the day of the Lord’s resurrection! Let us ring the bells and have services as usual, and leave the matter in God’s hands.
