THIS SIDE UP I
‘ll bet you a big jar of raspberry jam
And also the strawberry milk in your cup
That no matter how long you practice each day
You can’t drop your jelly- bread jelly-side up.
There’s something in gravity, turns them around
So they always go splat with a splash on the floor.
As soon as you drop it, just wave, “bye-bye bread,”
And go to the cupboard to get you some more.
And if your mom screams that you’ve ruined her rug
With all your upside-down jelly- bread glup,
Just bet her her knife and her fork and her cup
She can’t drop her jelly-bread jelly-side up! From Apples, Snakes and Bellyaches, by Calvin Miller, published by Word, Dallas, 1990, pg. 83
