A monastery at which several hundred young monks were receiving their training had a rule that each Wednesday evening’s sermon must be preached by one of the novitiates as part of his training. Brother John, one of the novitiates, was terribly worried about not being able to deliver a sermon by himself and became increasingly anxious as the day of his turn came nearer and nearer. He attempted to juggle the roster so as to miss his turn, but his attempts were unsuccessful and finally the dreadful day arrived. When the time came for him to deliver his sermon, he stood up and said to all the assembled monks, “Do you know what my sermon is about this evening?” They all answered, “No.” He then said, “Neither do I,” and sat down.
