Once the wife of Rabbi Levy Wolfe of Zhbarazh accused her maid servant of stealing a costly vessel. Tearfully, the girl denied the deed. When the Rabbi saw his wife putting on her best clothing in order to attend the Rabbinical court, he too put on his Sabbath coat. His wife protested, saying that she knew full well how to conduct herself before the Rabbinical court. “Indeed, you do,” said the Rabbi, “but the poor servant girl, as whose counsel I am going, does not, and who but I will defend her?” From an 18th century Hasidic tale
