THANKSGIVING DAY EXERCISE
A good Thanksgiving Day exercise might consist of sitting down with two sheets of paper. On one we ought to list all the things we crave and are yearning to acquire. On the other sheet we ought to enumerate all those things we own and could lose. To our surprise we would find the first list quickly exhausted while the second would appear endless. We would probably soon tear up the first list, feeling a little ashamed and largely thankful. Every day is Thanksgiving Day on the calendar of the religious Jew. We are obliged to recite no fewer than 100 blessings each day. Perhaps we might add one prayer of petition: “Thou hast given so much to me, Give me one thing more – a grateful heart.” From Lessons for Living: Reflections on the Weekly Bible Readings and on the Festivals, by Rabbi Sidney Greenberg
