AN EYE FOR AN EYE IN THE SWEET BYE AND BYE
Baton Rouge, LA – The Associated Press reports that a woman who plucked out a teenager’s eye during an exorcism ritual won’t go to jail. Andrea Cowan, who was originally sentenced to a six-month term for cruelty to a juvenile, was instead ordered to buy an artificial eye worth $850 for the boy, pay $1,893.50 for the boy’s medical bills, and give the boy $2,000 to invest in certificates of deposit. She was also ordered to stay out of any position of authority in the church and perform 300 hours of community service over a five year period.Mrs. Cowan could have been sentenced to 10 years in prison on the cruelty charge. She was convicted of plucking out the boy’s eye during a ceremony to exorcise what both believed were demons from his body on March 23, 1987. From The Door, January/February, 1990
