FORGIVE YOURSELF
I watched the tail end of a sitcom the other night called the Hogan Family. I haven’t watched it too many times before but in this particular episode, the oldest boy, played by Justin Bateman, apparently was responsible for a school friend having an accident and winding up in the hospital. I don’t know what he did but he is eaten up with guilt over it. He does all kinds of acts of contrition and penance trying to win the forgiveness of the boy he hurt. He brings him a T.V., his C.D. player, cards, games, even flowers. The young man finally forgives the Hogan boy. But the main character is still heaping guilt upon himself. Finally, the mother, Sandy Duncan says: “Look, your family has forgiven you, your friends have forgiven you, the boy has forgiven you, a man of the cloth has forgiven you and God has forgiven you.
