THE PHONEY ORACLE OF DELPHI
The oracle at Delphi was established there because of a cleft in the earth which produced vapors that had a purifying effect on animals and humans. It was believed that men and women who inhaled the vapors became clairvoyant, with special powers to predict the future. According to legend, when he was only days old, the infant Apollo went in search of a place to erect his temple. Since Delphi was the navel of the earth, it was chosen, and Apollo added his spirit of reconciliation to the other spirits of the oracle. In time, Apollo was worshipped as the god of light, music, and above all, of prophecy as the oracle at the Temple of Apollo was consulted by the faithful from all over Greece and the Orient.
