COUNSELING BY ANOTHER NAME
Early in my pastoral ministry, I was challenged by the conviction of a fellow pastor in town. This pastor would not marry anyone who had not gone through premarital counseling. I received a phone call from a young man who was a member of this pastor’s church. He refused to attend premarital counseling and wanted me to perform the ceremony at this other church. I told the young man that I would be delighted to talk with him and his fiance. I then called this pastor and explained the situation, asking if it would be alright to perform the ceremony at his church. I also wanted to know what was so important about premarital counseling. He invited me over to talk to him about these issues. He converted me. When I met with this young couple, they told me all about the unreasonable demands of the other pastor.
