The Nativity of the Lord
“The Happy Hypocrite” is a story written by the late Max Beerbohm, one of the most respected writers of the early 20th century. It tells the tale of “Lord George Hall,” a man devoid of scruples — a true villain, mean-spirited and with an appearance that strikes fear into all who see him. His face alone is enough to cause terror. However, Lord George Hall falls in love with an innocent and beautiful young woman. She turns him down when he proposes to her, saying, “I can never be the wife of a man whose face is not saintly.” Determined to win her over, Lord George Hall commissions the finest artist in the land to create a mask of a saint for him, flawless in every detail. With the saintly mask, he approaches the woman once more, and this time, she accepts his proposal.
