Expect and accept God’s radical call to change

Three brothers, well into their nineties, lived together in a sprawling house. One evening, the eldest went to take a bath. He put one foot in, paused, and called down the stairs, “Was I getting in or out of the tub?”

His 94-year-old brother called back, “I’m not sure. I’ll come up and check.” But as he started up the stairs, he stopped midway and muttered, “Wait… was I going up or coming down?”

Their youngest brother, 92, sat at the kitchen table listening to the commotion. Shaking his head, he chuckled and said, “I sure hope I never get that absentminded.” He rapped his knuckles on the wooden table for luck, then stood up and called, “I’ll be right up—as soon as I see who’s at the door.”

Funny. But like so many jokes, it also speaks to something deeper—how we perceive ourselves and others. We laugh at forgetfulness, but what about spiritual forgetfulness? What if…
