CLEAN OR COMFORTABLE?
Each summer I chaperone a group of third and fourth grade boys through several days at church camp. One summer things went smoothly and I congratulated myself on our accomplishments, not the least of which was getting the boys to bathe each day. However, upon returning home I found my efforts were not totally successful. Several families found their sons’ suitcases neatly packed — with clean clothes. The boys had showered each evening, gone to bed, and then woke the next morning to put back on the clothes they had worn the previous day. They covered their clean bodies with dirty, sweaty clothes. When asked why, one boy replied, “The dirty clothes are more comfortable.” We can identify with that statement. How often do we cling to bad habits, unproductive attitudes, and even sin because it is more comfortable to continue as we are than to change?
