BACK-STREET TO BARGE
“The Barge People” is a parable told in James Carol’s book, Wonder and Worship. A long, narrow barge filled with people moves down the river to the open sea. The sea beckons them to come with the promise of fresh air and open vistas of hope. The barge people stop from time to time at the cities on the river. They invite the back-street people to take the journey to the sea. The back-street people are often old or poor, or victims of the sickness the city can breed. Drawn by the hospitality of the barge people and the lure of the sea, some do accept the invitation. The limited space on the barge means that for every back-street person who is welcomed on board, one barge person must remain behind. The barge people who make the choice of exchanging with back-street people give up going to the sea and its open future, certain that another barge will come one…
