PUT THE HELMET ON THE NUMBERS
Two years into his first pastorate, Rick Jones compares his first sermon on April 1, 1990 to the tackle that won him a spot on his high school football team. As a skinny, little freshman, he was sent up against a 235 lb senior. It was his job to “put the helmet on the numbers” and stop this starting fullback. In Rick’s own words, “As this 235 lb senior came barreling around the corner, I stepped in front of him and planted all 125 lbs. of my 5 foot frame in his path. My technique was flawless, and, though he did manage to fall forward over me, I had stopped the school’s star running back, much to the delight of his jeering and hooting senior classmates.
