A MERRY HEART DOES GOOD
Jesus, the Great Physician, declared the intended result of His teachings: “…that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). Part of that joy may well be a spirit of mirth. Mark Twain intuited what modern science is not documenting. In Tom Sawyer, he tells about the old man who “laughed loud and joyously, shook up the details of his anatomy from head to foot,” and ended by saying that such a laugh was “money in a man’s pocket, because it cut down the doctor’s bills like everything.” A researcher for the Nurses for Laughter organization discovered that humorous nurses lend a sense of well-being to patients, speed up their adjustment to the hospital setting, and drain off worry. No wonder laughter programs are emerging in hospitals, and doctors are actually prescribing mirth. From Laughter, Joy & Healing by Donald E. Demaray Baker
