PREOCCUPIED
In the classic book Pilgrim’s Progress John Bunyan describes a man with a rake gathering sticks and straw off the floor. He is so obsessed with his task that the man gazes permanently downward, never noticing that standing behind him is a shining figure holding out a golden crown. We also can easily become obsessed with our daily routine, closing our eyes to the unexpected gifts of God. Some time ago I drove a hundred miles to attend a meeting. At lunch that day a friend, who had driven much the same route, remarked on what a beautiful sight it had been to watch flock after flock of ducks and geese flying through the lovely rural area. I had to admit that during the drive my mind had been so preoccupied with the daily insignificant problems, that I had totally missed the beauty of the surrounding countryside and wildlife.
