CRASH-COURSE IN INTEGRATION
Making a right turn off the main highway onto a narrow two-lane road, I skidded on the gravel and wound up just short of hitting a waiting car. I expected an angry reaction from the occupants, a group of African American laborers leaving a nearby construction job.
