How Do You Recognize Him?

Today’s Lesson from Mark’s Gospel is the story of Jesus being baptized in the River Jordan by John The Baptist. Later in the New Testament, when the story is retold, John the Baptist confesses that when he first saw Jesus, He did not recognize him — that is, he did not recognize Him as the promised Messiah. “I confess I did not recognize Him … I did not recognize Him,” John says.

The promised Messiah is in our midst now! The Kingdom of God is now! Jesus’ invitation to live in God’s presence comes to us always in the present moment. The problem for us who have faith is not so much in believing that the Messiah of God dwells among us but in recognizing Him when we see Him and knowing His voice when we hear Him speak.
