RATING SYSTEMS FOR SERMONS
Rev. Norm Shouten, member of our Board of Directors and pastor of Our Savior’s Reformed Church, has discovered a system for rating sermons which you may find helpful. G – Generally acceptable to all. Filled with pious platitudes which would ruffle absolutely no one’s feathers. Usually described by most parishioners as “wonderfully uplifting”. PG – For more mature congregations. Relates religious principles to daily living, but is actually quite harmless because no action is necessary. Sometimes described by parishioners as “challenging”. R – Definitely restricted since it “tells it like it is”. Quite often is an open demand for change. Sometimes described by parishioners as “interesting” or “disturbing”. Is quite often accompanied by covert criticism. X – Positively limited to those who are willing to face openly the facts of life and the Christian faith. Upsetting to many. Meddling to most. Often produces comments like “shocking”, “in poor taste” or “stick to preaching the Bible” from parishioners. Usually preached by…
