From our school-days we remember the traditional “Seven Wonders” of the ancient world: the Pyramids of Egypt, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, and so on. The “Sunday Times Magazine” of London once asked several well-known persons to choose the “Seven Wonders” of the modern world. The results evoked much debate. Lord Kenneth Clark, for example, selected the “Concorde” aircraft as one of his “Seven Wonders.” A famous photographer included “American Hamburgers” on his list. Novelist Anthony Burgess had “Champagne” high on his list. Another novelist mentioned Disneyland. Other selections included the “Aurora Borealis” (or “Northern Lights”), the “Great Wall of China,” “New York City,” the “City of Venice,” and the “Taj Mahal.”

Like the original list, this modern list did not include God’s own first choice, which He clearly demonstrates for us in our remembrance of the Lord’s passion and death. In God’s eyes, we are the “wonder of the world.” We are the masterpiece of His creation. And wonder…
