The East German-made car, the “Trebbie” has long been a runt in the world auto market. Competitive only in the old East German socialist system where imports were severely restricted, it could always be counted on to provide work for laid-off mechanics. The car is notorious for inferior materials and workmanship as well as numerous breakdowns soon after purchase. At the factory, quality control personnel routinely “fit” the doors to the frame with a hammer. Despite its sub-standard quality, East Germans have always lined up to buy a Trebbie, sometimes waiting for years. Why? Quite simply, they didn’t have anything better to buy before trade was reopened with the West. Millions of members of the human race routinely opt for pleasures and possessions.
