THREE WAYS TO GIVE
There are three ways of giving: Grudge giving, duty giving and thanksgiving. Grudge giving says, “I have to.” Duty giving says, “I ought to.” And thanksgiving says, “I want to!” Grudge giving comes from constraint. Duty giving comes from a sense of obligation. Thanksgiving comes from a full heart. Nothing much is conveyed in grudge giving because “the gift without the giver is bare.” Something more happens in duty giving, but there is no song in it. Thanksgiving is an open gate into the love of God. Robert N. Rodenmayer, The Ministers Manual for 1978, Harper & Row, Publishers, San Francisco, 1977, p. 226, by Charles Wallis
