AN EMPTY GREETING
In Jack Elrod’s “The Ryatts,” Missy comes running in from the mailbox with a letter in her hand. Her voice is filled with excitement as she says, “We got our first Christmas card!” Her little brother Winky pops up and with the same sort of excitement written all over his face asks, “What’s it say?” Mom opens and reads the card as the two children wait, filled with anxious anticipation. The children’s enthusiasm quickly changes to disappointment as Mom reads: “Seasons Greetings! It’s time for Winky’s and Missy’s dental checkup!” When we place our hope in worldly things we’re always disappointed. The world always promises more than it can give. Don’t be disappointed. Trust in Christ. From The Ryatts December 3, 1990
