HIDDEN MONEY
Allison and Kelly Smith decided to play a trick on their mother at Christmas in 1991. They exchanged the Christmas presents she had sent from Detroit, Michigan, to Birmingham, Alabama where the girls lived. Then, they rewrapped the gifts and carried them to their family gathering in North Carolina to be opened before the eyes of their shocked mother. But Allison and Kelly got a little jolt themselves when their mother, seeing that the Liz Claiborne purses she bought had been swapped for different models, asked her daughters, if, before returning the gifts, they’d found the $200 she’d tucked into each bag! “They opened up the presents and their mother was pretty surprised, of course, and she said, ‘You did get your presents out of the purses, didn’t you?” reported Allison’s boyfriend, Rogelio Dieguez, who received the startled news back in Birmingham over the telephone late on Christmas eve.
