DIVER’S DIRECTIVES
As a Naval officer began his submarine training, he learned about the “Christmas Tree.” This is a control panel with red and green lights that indicate the open and closed position of each valve that lets air or water into compartments. Anytime the skipper gives the command to dive, that order is not carried out until the lights are showing green, meaning that it is safe to take action. “It’s too bad,” commented the young officer to a chaplain, “that PEOPLE don’t come equipped with a ‘Christmas Tree’ so they could make better decisions.” “They do,” replied the chaplain. “They just don’t always pay close attention to it before they dive.” From “Light Lines,” Net Results, by Herb Miller
