Members of a parish “Senior citizen” group staged a panel discussion on the subject of “longevity.” The panel included several of the group’s oldest members. During the event, one panelist, a very wealthy widow, was asked, “Margaret, why do you think God has permitted you to reach the ripe old age of ninety-six?” “To test the patience of my relatives,” Margaret replied.
In our society, the numbers in the life expectancy tables are getting higher. Whether or not this is to test the patience of more and more relatives, I don’t know. In any case, the fact is that God is permitting more people than ever before to reach a ripe old age. Surely “God must love the ‘seniors’ very much, He made so many of them.” But, it can be said also that God is not respecter of age.
