A PEACEFUL WAR
There were picnic tables on the battlefield. Somehow battles and picnics don’t go together. But there they were – GUNS and BUNS. It was the first battle of Bull Run. Both sides, the North and the South thought the whole issue would be resolved rather quickly, and few seemed to take this battle seriously. There were Congressmen and Senators joining with the Sunday crowd for a picnic as the war began. Some of the soldiers even joined in the fun as they got separated from the troops. Everybody was serious on Monday when they realized this was war… a war that divided our country. When I first read about that first battle, I shook my head in amazement… then I realized I was on a battlefield as well. And too often I find myself wearing Bermuda shorts and tennis shoes instead of the armor of God.
