When the new Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Airport opened several years ago, it was hailed as one of the biggest and best-equipped air terminals in the world. Within a few seconds of flying time from the airport, standing on the highest point in the area, is Union Church. Members of the Church feared that sooner or later a low-flying jet coming in for a landing would crash into the Church steeple. To lessen the danger, an eight-foot, neon-lighted cross was erected on top of the steeple. When asked to comment on the bright-shining cross, one of the veteran jet pilots said, “It’s a real Godsend! Most of us use it as a guide to the field.”
The early Christians faced the East when they prayed because they expected Christ to return from that direction. As time went by, instead of facing the East when they prayed, they faced a cross, making the cross a sort of compass. In the cross they found direction for their lives.…
