MAKING THIS TOWN TONIGHT
I was touched by the following story I found in On the Upbeat: All day the elderly woman sat in the lobby of a commercial hotel in a small New England town. Neat as a pin in her Sunday best, she watched with quiet pleasure the hustle and bustle of salesmen scurrying in and out with their sample cases. Finally, the young lady at the cigar counter got curious and walked over and offered her a magazine to read. The woman refused graciously, “I’m not waiting for anyone,” she said. “I’m just making the town today.” As a puzzled expression came over the young lady’s face, she explained further. “My husband was a salesman; we called them drummers in those days. He couldn’t take time off the road for a honeymoon, so I made the trip with him. Fifty years ago today we spent our wedding night in this hotel. Twenty-five years ago I came here with him again.
