A STRONG SENSE OF CALL
A strong sense of call would seem to be an imperative if one is going to be an overseas missionary, especially if you are going to face difficult situations. Jim Elliot, one of the five who were martyred by the Auca Indians in 1956, evidenced a strong sense of call to missionary service in Ecuador. He wrote to friends who had encouraged him to consider ministry in the United States where many needed a deeper understanding of the Bible’s truth: I dare not stay home while Quichuas perish. What if the well-filled church in the homeland needs stirring? They have the Scriptures, Moses, and the prophets, and a whole lot more.
