When Woolworth decided to open a brand new department store of his own, he worked hard for the grand opening day. Just a week before he was to open his doors, a competitor just down the street came out with a massive sales promotion and advertising campaign. Obviously, the competitor had gotten wind of Woolworth’s new store and wanted to sink Woolworth before he opened. The competitor took out full page ads in every issue of the daily newspapers. The ads read, “Do Your Shopping Here! We Have Been Doing Business In This Location For 50 Years.” The young Woolworth was devastated. How could he handle such an assault of advertising? What could he do against such claims? The next week he ran ads of his own. “In Business Only One Week.
