Good Friday,

On a hillside near Capernaum, Jesus had preached the “Sermon on the Mount.” On Mount Calvary, the Sermon was fulfilled-not preached again, but lived. In the act of death, Jesus brings the Sermon on the Mount to life. In the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes were spoken. Now, on the Cross, the Beatitudes are. They come to life. On Good Friday Jesus is the Beatitudes.

Jesus is “Poor in Spirit.” He gives Himself to us stripped of all attachments except one: His attachment to doing His Father’s Will. The Cross is our assurance that, though we have nothing, in possessing Jesus we have everything.

Jesus “Mourns.” The “brotherhood” Jesus preached was best understood by those who allowed Jesus to touch their lives of sin and misery-to mourn with them. Until the day of final victory and total rejoicing, there will be misery and suffering enough for all. The Cross is our guarantee that we shall never, ever, have to bear the burden…
