10 COMMANDMENTS JUDGED UNCONSTITUTIONAL
The Arizona Senate determined that the 10 Commandments are unconstitutional. Arizona’s House majority leader, L. S. Adams, introduced a bill on Feb. 25, 1957, stating that “the 10 Commandments of God are hereby adopted as the law of this state.” Adams told reporters, “It is my feeling that the 20 volumes of laws on our statute books are meaningless if everyone obeyed the 10 Commandments.” Despite this noble statement the bill was blocked. “You cannot force every man or woman to honor they father or mother. I have known fathers or mothers who did not deserve to be honored. No graven images? No other gods? In this country we have freedom of religion. Not take the name of the Lord in vain? Tell that to the Marines! Thou shalt not kill? That would outlaw the Arizona National Guard. In time of war, the Guard kills.”
