THE ART OF PERSUASION — COUNTRY STYLE
Out in the country people trade and buy livestock, much in the same way that city folks buy provisions for themselves in the supermarket. As in the city, a farmer sometimes comes across a deal he can’t refuse. My old boyhood friend Fred tells this story about an experience he had to prove the point. “I tell you what I’m going to do,” said Fred to his friend Louis. “For a hundred dollars, I’m going to get you an elephant. What do you think about that?” Louis replied, “I think it sounds crazy. I don’t want an elephant. I don’t even like elephants.” Fred said, “Don’t be so stubborn. This is a deal I’m offering you; a full-grown elephant for just one hundred dollars.” Louis protested, “But I don’t want a full-grown elephant for no hundred dollars.
