One of the most fascinating and best-known facts in the Mahatma Gandhi story is Gandhi’s great admiration for the teachings of Jesus. Gandhi once said, “The man to whom I owe the most, the man to whom India owes the most, is a man who never set foot in India — and that man is Jesus.” Gandhi was especially interested in Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, particularly those portions of the Sermon having to do with non-violent resistance to evil. Gandhi’s great admiration for Jesus as teacher had a tremendous impact on the history of India and the history of the world, as we know. Yet, Gandhi never became a Christian. He knew in his heart that to be a genuine Christian disciple something more than devotion to Jesus’ teachings is required.

The Apostle Paul also greatly admired Jesus’ teachings. He made it clear that he deeply loved not only the teachings but also the way in which Jesus embodied them…
