Santa Clara County Supervisor Dianne McKenna recently told the following story at the DeAnza College Commencement that she read in Bloom County: Opus, the penguin was suffering a crisis of faith. While standing in front of the television he says, “I believe in our government,” only to have the TV announcer say, “Today the President admitted sending a personally inscribed copy of Leo Buscaglia’s Living, Loving and Hugging to Khadafy.” Opus walks into the next room and says, “I have faith in the forces of Capitalism.” Just then Milo reads from the newspaper, “Today on Wall Street everybody but the hot dog vendors were busted.” Continuing into another room, Opus says, “There’s always religion.” And Steve Dallas reads from a magazine, “Oral Roberts strangled Jimmy Swaggart and ran off with Tammy Bakker’s drug counselor.” Stepping outside onto the back porch, Opus queries, “What can a fellow believe in anymore? Are there no more bastions of purity?” Just then he spots a pregnant woman…
