A PARISHIONER’S PRAYER FOR A PASTOR
You may be able to adapt this in either a sermon or your church newsletter, to help instruct your people how to pray for you. Our Father, this man who ministers to us, carries burdens that no one can share, accepts confidences that may not be disclosed, meets disappintments that must be faced alone, and envisions goals beyond our understanding — not necessarily because of superior foresight, but because he is an individual with particular abilities and aspirations. Each day brings to him those who are desperate, broken by continued discouragments, frightened by the onslaught of real or imaginary diseases, weakened by the presence of temptations and distraught after repeated failures. He must spend the lonely hours fighting impulses to accede to popular demands and offer easy answers. And in the encounters when he meets loneliness, selfishness or bigotry, grant him strength and reserve to protect him from stupidity. Grant him the tolerance and humor to recognize that…
